Today in class, we watched a movie titled Klansville, USA. The movie highlighted the fact that during the 1960s the Ku Kux Klan's membership had increased to over 10,000 members. This large increase in membership gained North Carolina the nickname of "Klansville, USA". This film also highlights the main cause for the Klan starting again in the South after membership had died out previously.
This main cause for the Klan starting again was D.W. Griffith's film, The Birth of a Nation. This film made it seem as if the Ku Klux Klan's actions were not only justifiable, but necessary. Because of this film, the KKK membership greatly increased in the South, particularly North Carolina. North Carolina quickly went from being known as the most progressive state to Klansville, USA.
Overall this movie was very interesting, especially since I live in North Carolina. I live in a rural part of North Carolina where I know there is still a high population of Klan members and they are still recruiting people.
